Systems Engineer (Linux) – Hedge Fund – City, London

A systematic Hedge Fund based in the City are looking for a passionate Systems Engineer (junior/mid-level) to join an elite team of 3. The role has a variety of responsibilities and will grow as the business grows:

  • Maintenance of all infrastructure, including Linux, Windows, VMs and containers, networking devices, databases and storage solutions
  • Proactively deal with monitoring alerts and help to develop the monitoring platform
  • Provide support for issues and user requests across all their technologies
  • Contribute to the development of configuration management
  • Automate routine tasks
  • Carry out project work across all aspects of the infrastructure and IT systems
  • Learn, trial and implement new technologies
  • Implement and adhere to system and network security Identify and drive best practice standards, with a focus on Open Source offerings where possible

Requirements:

  • Solid understanding of and practical experience with Linux, preferably Ubuntu or other Debian-based releases
  • Experience with Puppet for configuration management and scripting in Shell, Python or Ruby
  • Basic understanding of NAS, SAN and distributed storage architectures such as Ceph
  • Experience with networking technologies, such as switching, routing, multicast, TCP/IP, VLANs, OSPF, BGP
  • Knowledge of file systems and logical volume management such as LVM and ZFS (desirable)
  • Familiarity with analysis tools, e.g. iostat, strace, tcpdump (desirable)
  • Experience with VMware or other virtualisation technologies (desirable)
  • Experience with system and network monitoring (some familiarity with SNMP)
  • Experience with Microsoft Active Directory, LDAP and Kerberos (desirable)
  • Experience with PostgreSQL database administration (desirable)
  • Experience with Applications and tools such as apache, git, svn, rsyslog (desirable)
  • A CCNA or CCNP qualification (desirable)
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills, clear judgement and critical thinking skills
  • Strong initiative, spots potential opportunities
  • Able to work on a range of diverse and stimulating projects, independently and part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Committed to producing high quality work, with excellent attention to detail and strong documentation skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, able to communicate effectively with people of varying technical abilities
  • A strong academic background to degree-level (ideally in computer science), with some systems experience
  • Finance experience not necessary
